From playground to production
Self-service that stays governed, told as a maturity path. A Creator experiments in their private workspace — every user's personal playground. Once proven, they build the team version in a shared workspace, where a defined set of users or groups manages it and read access is controlled through existing Entra ID groups. Company-wide datasets live in the global MyCompany workspace, visible to every licensed user and curated by Enterprise Creators. Datasets are bound to their workspace — work moves forward, datasets stay home.

Categories: order without bureaucracy
Inside each Workspace, every dataset belongs to exactly one Category — a name and a color. Finance green, logistics blue — so a workspace with hundreds of datasets stays scannable in the Portal and in every client tool. Datasets can be re-categorized within their workspace at any time, so structure evolves without ceremony.
Licensing & roles
Licenses stack. VDP_User views and executes Virtual Datasets; VDP_Creator is an add-on that also creates and models — every Creator also holds a User license. The admin assigns licenses in the Portal's License Management section — day-to-day licensing is a two-click affair. Above the licenses sit two privileged roles, assigned in the customer's own Entra ID through the Virtual Data Platform Enterprise Application: VDP_ADMIN operates the platform side (Locations, Agents, Systems, licensing), and VDP_ENTERPRISE_CREATOR — a Creator additionally allowed to create and manage the company-wide catalog in MyCompany.
Privileged access lives in your own Entra ID — assigned and audited where your identities already live — while everyday licensing stays self-service in the Portal.
For the strictest environments there is Virtual Data Platform Dedicated: a dedicated backend cluster plus private networking via Azure Private Endpoints — no traffic over the public internet. More on the security page
